River Course Highly Rated in Annual Golf Course Rankings

April 26th, 2011

The River Course at Humber Valley Resort was ranked as the 38th best course in Canada in the annual ScoreGolf magazine rating of Canadian golf courses and 5th for courses with green fees of under $100. This ranking was given following an unannounced visit to the Resort by the ranking team last August.

This independent verification of the quality of the course and its facilities is good news for western Newfoundland and should lead to an increase in interest from players from other provinces.

Scenes of Winter

January 20th, 2011

Below are a few photos taken around the resort in the aftermath of yesterdays heavy snowfall.  As you will see the snow was wet and heavy but the result was also very beautiful!

This snow is making a difference.  There is now enough down for most activities to be well underway.  There is night skiing and snowshoeing at both Blomidon and Pasadena Ski Parks this Friday followed by food and social events.  This Friday also sees the first weekly group snowshoe walk organised by Cycle Solutions.  Contact them on 709 634 7100 for details.

Winter has Arrived (3)

January 18th, 2011

The snow this week has the good news flowing thick and fast!

All the local cross country ski parks (Blomidon, Pasadena and Whaleback (Stephenville)) are now open and offering skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails.  All were reported this morning as expecting all their trails to open and groomed by this weekend.

Likewise, in an interview this morning, the CEO of the Snowmobile Federation stated that groomers were being moved around today in preparation for the start of trail grooming.  A snowmobile was also seen being ridden into the Pasadena Irving for refueling last evening.  It’s a great sign of things to come when you start to see this on floor of the valley.

Finally, there is a winter storm warning in effect for the Humber Valley area for tomorrow/Thursday with a prediction for another 20-30 cms of snow.  If it comes to pass it will be a great boost to all the winter activities.

Winter has arrived – come and enjoy!

Winter Has Arrived!

January 17th, 2011

Great news (1).  Winter finally arrived in the Humber Valley last night with a snow fall of around 6″.  It has continued snowing off and on all day today and the valley is finally starting to look like the winter wonderland we have all been waiting for.

Great news (2) Marble Mountain has just announced that the mountain will open for skiing tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 18th.  One lift will be open servicing, initially, 6 runs.  They are hopeful of having more runs and the beginners hill open by the weekend.

Remember also that the Blomidon Cross Country Ski Park is already open for business.

There is not much base to the snow cover as yet but the more intrepid snowmobilers are starting to find places to put their sleds onto the snow.  The following picture of the Blomidons taken last Friday (on a day more like a March day than a January day) shows that snow cover is starting to build at higher elevations.

Finally, the time has come when you can start planning that winter getaway to the west coast in the reasonable expectation that there will be snow to enjoy when you arrive.

We look forward to meeting you when you visit.

Winter has Arrived!

January 6th, 2011

Great news from the Humber Valley.  Temperatures finally dropped last night allowing Marble to commence snow making which has continued through the day today. Temperatures are forecasat to remain low overnight tonight and through tomorrow but then warm up over the weekend as a mixed bag of rain and snow hits the area.  Temperatures drop again in the early part of next week.  Hopefully there will be news of an openng date before too much longer.

To add to the sense of optimism genereated by seeing the snow guns at work was the announcement from the Blomidon cross country ski park this morning that they are open with 6 kms of trails available for skiing and snow shoeing.

Watch this space for news of more activities starting up as our winter finally gets going.

Winter Celebration

December 14th, 2010

We are getting word that planning has started for a major winter event to celebrate the wide diversity of winter activities available on the West Coast.

It’s early days yet but expect lots of opportunity to see and try many activities over the course of the 4 day celebration.  Also expect to see some serious evening entertainment  taking place during the event.

The event is planned to run from 17 – 20 March 2011 which also coincides with the Marble Cup weekend at Marble Mountain so we expect to see lots of pressure on accommodation in and around the Humber Valley during this period.  Book early to ensure that you have the opportunity to join the fun.

St Patrick’s Day Weekend

December 14th, 2010

This winter St Patricks Day will be celebrated on the weekend of 12/13 March.

We understand that that the owners of the resort are planning a Paddy’s Day party in the clubhouse on Saturday 12th March.  The format of the evening is still undecided but is likely to include something like a steak dinner followed by live music.

Book your accommodation early to make sure that you can join the fun!

Rental Cars

December 14th, 2010

We want to alert returning and potential guests to concerns about availability of rental vehicles in Newfoundland generally and on the West Coast in particular.  These shortages are most acute in peak seasons but seem to appear without warning at other times also.  We have already had reports from a potential guest that they were unable to book a car in St John’s in July 2011!

A vehicle is essential if you are contemplating staying on the Resort since it is some 20 Kms from Corner Brook the nearest major service center.  It is also essential if you are to make the most of your time in the area, to be able to take advatage of the activities in the region and explore the many spectacular sights to be found throughout the West Coast.

Please book your vehicle early to be sure of avoiding the disappointment of frustrated holiday plans!
